Robert Millis (Climax Golden Twins, rmillis) has a new LP out entitled “relief” and recently returned from a 9 month trip to India where, as a Fulbright research scholar, he studied Indian music, sound art and the early recording industry. For this performance he will be working with the resonances and dissonances of overlapping tanpura drones alongside abstracted field recordings.

Gregory Lenczycki is a Los Angeles based composer and performer. His work explores the architecture of sound and the rhythms of space through both electronic and acoustic means. Recent performances include the commissioned requiem entitled You Are Not Alone, the opera Brainchild II, the song cycle Mont Blanc based upon Shelley’s poem of the same name and video and sound work now on display at the Centre for Living Arts in Mobile AL.

Jorge Martin, part research scientist at Cedars-Sinai, part musician, is one-half of the duo Spastic Colon. His sounds originate from sine waves, pulses, feedback, and from people with whom he collaborates. Returning to his classically-trained musical beginnings, Jorge is intently focused upon the continued mastery of his clarinet.

Nicholas Walsh is an artist and musician currently residing in Jamaica. A recipient of degrees from Bowdoin College and San Francisco Art Institute, he has been on the outer fringes of the American noise-rock scene for quite a while. He is a prolific home-recorder of self-composed music, and examples of his work may be found at: https://soundcloud.com/search?q=powerprocess

New LP “relief” out soon on Helen Scarsdale

New LP out on the lovely Helen Scarsdale label.

From the label press release:

Our man Millis is a Climax Golden Twin and a noted curator of globe trotting / time traveling esoterica, amongst other accolades. In the former category, Millis and Jeffery Taylor steadily release some of the most headscratching amalgamations of avant-rock, decontextualized temple music, heightened-state minimalism, and collaged field recordings this side of the Sun City Girls (including the soundtrack to the cult film Session Nine); and in the latter, Millis has published a number of acclaimed anthologies for Sublime Frequencies (Scattered Melodies, This World is Unreal Like a Snake in a Rope, Phi Ta Khon, The Crying Princess, etc.) and Dust-To-Digital (our personal favorite, aptly titled Victrola Favorites). With his fingers in so many jars of jam, it can seem like an uncommon occurrence for Millis to release solo work although he is one to smear his sticky hands all over himself in performance, installation, and collaboration. Thus, The Helen Scarsdale Agency is delighted in presenting his latest opus, Relief.

A fever dream of blurred harmonics and ethnomusicological spelunking, Relief repeatedly returns to variations on a peculiar yet beautifully serpentine drone, whose twinkling acoustic properties meld the hallucinatory mouth-music of the Bangladeshi Murung people and the curved air hypnosis of Terry Riley. Millis bookends and interrupts his mysterious miasma with comedic interludes snatched from his lauded collection of antique 78s, maudlin piano tone-clusters, and teleported crescendos of spectral ballroom waltzes. More Nurse With Wound than The Caretaker, this polyglot raga-drone of daytime somnambulism and psychedelic slipperiness speaks to the uneasy borders at psychological, cultural, and geophysical states of being. Oh, to be a human on this planet.

New LP due October/November on the Helen Scarsdale Agency label

As you may (and should) have noticed, The Agency hasn’t published anything since the release of the epic 2LP set by The Slaves, late in 2012. The reasons for this delay are numerous, and we’ll simply summarize those delays rather vaguely as being the aftermath of a grand existential drama. All of that said, we have the glimmers of new releases on the horizon — one of which has entered production this week, that being the ethnomusicological fever-dream from R.Millis. Known to some as a Climax Golden Twin, known to others as a curator for the impeccable Sublime Frequencies label, Millis has long been one of our favorite artists in all of his delirious manifestations of sounds both old and new. But that publication is not slated until early October (or so we’ve been told).
